A forest fed by the Mirna
Istria's official tourism material describes the damp Motovun Forest, continuously influenced by the Mirna River, as the epicentre of the region's truffle landscape. White and black truffles grow underground in association with the forest ecosystem and grey clay soils of central Istria.
Look at Motovun from the valley and the destination becomes legible: medieval stone above, river and forest below, vineyards on the slopes between.
Why the hill town matters
Motovun gives the truffle journey a natural base. You can move from walls and views to forest paths, then back to a table where Teran, Malvazija, olive oil and truffles make the surrounding landscape edible.
Beyond the forest
The wider truffle area stretches through the Mirna valley and into the interior around Livade, Buzet, Oprtalj and other central-Istrian landscapes. That makes truffles a strong entry point for a multi-day inland itinerary rather than a single tasting stop.
